The Hawthorne Hamburger Project

When The Lady came home with the news that the Hawthorne Fred Meyer had added a hamburger bar in their deli bistro… my first thought was… “Oh Brother, just what the Humankinds of Portland need is another hamburger stand…”

As it turns out, I was wrong… Melanie, the chef at the Hawthorne FM Bistro, has created a slate filled with burgers made with all fresh ingredients. For The Lady and moi, The Hawthorne Hamburger Project aka HHP is reminiscent of our favorite SoCal hamburger stand, In-n-Out Burgers, known for its high quality, fresh burgers and fries.

On Wednesday, The Lady ordered the “Classic” Hamburger (come with cheese for no extra charge) made with 100% all-natural chuck ground fresh (never frozen) every morning; Boar’s Head Vermont Cheddar; freshly-grilled onions; lettuce and tomato on a toasted “Pub” roll and schmeared with Mel’s freshly-made, secret “Special Sauce”, similar to Thousand Island, only better.

Each burger is cooked to order, so you may have to wait a few minutes, but it’s more than worth it. The cost for  the “Classic” is $4.75. For $3.00 more, you can add freshly-cut potatoes that are fried twice to seal out the oil and guarantee the fries will be extra crispy plus a medium fountain drink… $7.75 is a great price, especially for this level of quality… seriously… this is in the same league as a Cheeseburger and Fries… animal-style… at In-n-Out.

Milkshakes made from Old-Fashioned Soft Serve Ice Cream in Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry are also available… or just an old-fashioned cone.

Yesterday, The Lady returned with her Cheese Buddy, Doug, to HHP. Doug ordered the Classic and declared it a winner. Our survey has the Classic with two wins and no losses…

The Lady ordered the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, my-o-my, she loves chicken… what’s not to like… and this sammy had The Lady swooning… something she rarely does…

HHP uses fresh (never frozen) Foster Farms boneless chicken breast, Boar’s Head Bacon and Pepper Jack Cheese, with fresh tomato, lettuce and onions on a Dave’s Killer Bread Bun and schmeared with Boar’s Head Gourmaise Sauce…. $5.25 for all that quality… how are they doing that??? Again she added those fresh cut fries and snagged a side of Mel’s Special Sauce for dipping.

You can get a chili burger, a chicken burger, a turkey burger and a Vegan burger made with a grilled portobello mushroom. And for you dawgs… you can get a hot dog… something for everyone… even a Kid’s burger and fries for $3.00.

The Lady gives the Hawthorne Hamburger Project 4 Paws out of 4 Paws (cause that’s all I’ve got… and all I would lend her). If Mel wants to make it more perfect, she should add a grilled cheese made with Boar’s Head specialty cheese… maybe a different one every week… now that would be perfect…

… Just a bit annoying is that The lady didn’t take me with her and she didn’t bring any leftovers home… Okay, Fred Meyer is one of those pesky “No Pets Allowed” establishments so I’ll give her a pass on leaving me home… but the leftover issue is still on the table… sheesh… Humankinds…
