Cheese of the Day: March 26 – Point Reyes Original Blue

ACS CCP® Sheri Allen has the Sunday morning blues in our Facebook Cheese Study Group, Cheese of the Day series. She attended the California Artisan Cheese Festival this weekend and got a chance to check out the cheeses of Pt. Reyes:

I’ve been in Petaluma for the California Artisan Cheese Guild Festival so the Blue Cheese of the Day should naturally be Point Reyes Original Blue!

My dear friend Karin Karlsson makes cheese at Point Reyes, how lucky she is to work with Kuba Hemmerling. I’ve been enjoying Original Blue (raw) and their Bay Blue (pasteurized) this weekend. Several local restaurants call it out by name on their menues. Those blue stuffed dates were memorable.
The Terroir and the proximity to the ocean absolutely influences this beautiful raw milk cheese.

Award winning! Here’s what they say about the flavors of the cheese. I like its peppery notes on a burger.

Original Blue-
The addictive flavor is bold with hints of sweet milk and a peppery finish.
Made from raw (non-pasteurized), rBST-free cows’ milk
Made with microbial (vegetarian) rennet
Aged 3-5 months
Certified Gluten Free
TASTING NOTES:
Milky white in color with blue-green veins throughout
Ultra-creamy texture with medium-strong blue mold flavor
Sweet, fresh milk with a medium-to-strong punch of blue flavor

The Giacomini family traces its roots to the mountainous terrain of northern Italy. In the early 20th century, Tobias Giacomini left Europe to settle in Northern California. A half-century later, his grandson, Bob, and Bob’s new wife, Dean, bought a farm near Tomales Bay and began raising Holstein cows and selling milk to a local creamery. Their herd grew from 150 to 500 by the mid-1990s, and the farm’s lush pastures are now certified organic. Bob and Dean had four daughters and, in 2000, the family launched the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company, using its own milk to make its first cheese, Point Reyes Original Blue.

Made from raw milk and aged for six months, Original Blue is creamy and tangy with a medium punch of blue flavor, and a perfect balance of salt. The cheese’s rich, unique flavors are attributed to the high quality of the farm’s pastures and their proximity to the ocean. Original Blue is wonderful on a cheese plate, crumbled into a salad, or served alongside a grilled steak.
