I probably started my food journey about 12 years ago when I decided to enroll in culinary school.  It was at the time when the concept of the ‘celebrity chef’ was just starting to explode and I joined the throngs of 20-somethings that thought we’d be the next Food Network stars. The notion of being a Cheesemonger or affiliated with cheese in any way was definitely not on my radar. But, my brief stint in restaurant work did open my eyes to the fact that cheese was more than just a topping on a sandwich or pizza.  I vividly remember walking into a restaurant and seeing my head chef marinating chunks of Manchego in herbs and oil and it was a bit of a ‘mind blown’ moment—cheese was more than just a bystander… it was the star. It was not the moment that led me to cheese, but is one of the strongest connections I have to when my interest and curiosity was definitely sparked.

As far as being a cheese geek?  That probably came when I saw Humboldt Fog for the first time. I was a bit like Ralphie in the “A Christmas Story”, oogling it through the glass of the cheese case.

I am the Specialty Cheese Buyer for Whole Foods in Portland, ME and, I know I’m not alone in saying this as a buyer or monger, there is no typical day. There are movement reports to be run, orders to place and deliveries to receive, displays to be built and cheese to sell. Some days my entire day can be spent on the floor stocking and/or selling, while others can be spent putting away orders and getting the next ones ready.  All through it, applying the passion I have for all things cheese.
