Family Visits… Lunch Happens

My cousin Mandy, her husband, Dan the Man (not to be confused with The Man) and her cousin Julie and husband came to visit us in Lavonia earlier this week. I had last seen Mandy and Dan when we moved from Washington State in 2017. The Man and Dan, the Man, are especially close and it was as if they were never apart… starting their conversation right where they left off back in 2017.

I wanted to do a special lunch for them, emphasizing the cafe’s Farm-to-Table philosophy, to showcase Southern Cuisine. I spoke with LaDonna, owner of Sweet Combs of Honey and the Honey Bee Cafe located inside SCOH. LaDonna and her staff crafted a four course luncheon that incorporated local produce with classic Southern dishes.

The first course showcased South Georgia peaches and Burrata (from BelGioioso) topped with chiffonade basil (from my garden) and drizzled with olive oil.

The second course featured fresh cucumbers from Farm 328 in Martin, Georgia and fresh local dill, as a cold cucumber soup that was pureed but maintained a slight chunkiness.

Georgia grits and Grillades, the classic New Orleans dish, was served as the main course. The grits are produced by Nora Mills and are available for purchase at Sweet Combs. I also offer a selection of Stone-Ground Grits in my Amazon Influencer store.  Fresh veggies from Farm 328 were incorporated into the gravy that accompanied the steak strips which were tender and tasty. The gravy had a mild heat to it.

Served last was a Pecan Pie Cheesecake made from scratch using South Georgia pecans. The best cheesecake I have ever had… hands down. The cheesecake was dense and creamy.

It’s  always great to see family… I miss them already…

The Man, aka Peter M. Wright, has written his first novel: Gold Fever, available at amazon.com as a kindle book for only $2.99.

Written in the flavor of one of our favorite movies, Romancing the StoneGold Fever is a romantic adventure that brings together an archeologist looking to establish his name in his field and a rock star on the verge of burn-out.

In GOLD FEVER  an Archeologist motivated by a newly discovered clue, searches for a fabled Native American Legend – the long ago lost Seven Golden Cities of Cibola. While the Archeologist seeks to prove the legend is actually true, he is constantly under attack by a second group seeking the treasure.
