My birthday was last week and I had been saving a gifted wedge of Rogue River Blue for a special occasion… and in my world, it doesn’t get any more special than my birthday… and this was my 71st special birthday… although I still think of myself as 27, the age I was when I first met The Man.
I still remember 2009 following RRB being named Best of Show at the ACS Cheese Competition. Our DPI representative, Amy, arrived at the Hawthorne Cheese Kiosk with POS material to boast an Oregon cheese winning the top prize. We were all thrilled and excited… and “Oregon Proud”. RRB would win the top prize at the ACS again in 2011. In 2019 the cheese world was rocked when Rogue River Blue won the Grand Championship at the World Cheese Awards in Italy. RRB became the first American Cheese (not to be confused with American Cheese) to win the big kahuna and we Americans were over the moon… France, not so much. No one in the cheese world deserved this award more than David Gremmels, a true Ambassador of Cheese and one who has supported me every step of my cheese journey.
The Man and I paired the RRB with Miel d’Acacia from Apiculteur Alain Bonvaldt and a trio of Kelly’s Jellies. We added a few pieces of chocolate and Rose Prosecco. The Man swooned… so did I.
Acacia honey is harvested in the Jura region of France in June and July each year as the acacia trees bloom. The honey is clean and free of pollutants. The taste is delicate, sweet and floral. I purchased this particular honey during my Comte Press junket in 2019. The Man and I only use it on “special” occasions… such as my birthday. The KY selection included their signature Habanero Pepper Jelly, Seasonal Cranberry Vanilla and their new fruit spread Cherry Rhubarb. We both loved the honey pairing; The Man preferred the Cherry Rhubarb pairing and I preferred the Habanero.
The 2021 Rogue River Blue is earthy, sweet and salty with lingering spice and fermented pear notes. It is wrapped in local grape leaves that are macerated in a local organic pear brandy. I have written about RRB several times as new vintages are released each fall. My last review was 2019, after RRB became “The World’s Best Cheese”.
