For those in the South, here’s an introduction to Face Rock Creamery.

Because of its temperate weather, the Southern Coast of Oregon is an ideal area to grow grass, raise dairy cows which yield high quality milk. And high quality milk makes great cheese. In the 1880’s, the City of Bandon, in this coastal region boasted ten large cheese makers and many more farmstead producers. Fires in 1914 and again in 1936 burned down the town destroying the cheesemaking business. After the ’36 fire, only one cheese maker decided to rebuild and created the Bandon Cheese Factory.

In 2000, the Bandon Cheese Factory was bought out by a competitor, which chose to close the factory and demolished the building at the north entrance to the town. Enter Greg Drobot and Bandon native, Brad Sinko who brought cheesemaking back to Bandon in the form of Face Rock Creamery. Brad had been making Award-Winning Cheese at Pike Place Market in Seattle for more than 20 years but missed Bandon. Ta Da… another Award-Winning cheese factory was born on the site of the old Bandon Cheese Factory with cheddar at the heart of their business.

One of the cheeses you will be able to purchase at Harris Teeter and can win here in the current giveaway is Face Rock Creamery’s Extra Aged Cheddar.

This premium cheddar is a luscious smooth cheddar with buttery notes and a creamy texture that melts both on the palate and under the broiler. Tyrosine crystals are beginning to make their first as this cheddar ages; the amino acid crystals present in quality aged Cheddars, Goudas and Grana cheeses.

At a recent private event to introduce Northeast Georgia to Face Rock Cheddars, I paired this fine cheddar with Kelly’s signature Habanero Pepper Jelly. The pairing was sublime. Kelly’s piquant spice and the buttery notes of Face Rock’s Extra Aged Cheddar.

For those of you in Northeast Georgia, a selection of Kelly’s Jellies and Preserves are available at Sweet Combs of Honey in Downtown Lavonia.
